Peacebuilding Among Former Adversaries

On Oct. 20 in Barrancabermeja, Colombia, the Castleberry Peace Institute, together with the Aulas de Paz Foundation from Medellin, brought together the leadership of the main armed actors who fought in this area for so many years and caused so much harm. Among those present at this meeting were former leaders and peace negotiators of the FARC, the former leaders of the Central Bolivar Bloc paramilitary group, leaders of the local Peace and Reconciliation Council, victims groups, representatives from the Colombian police, groups representing the disabled, young people and representatives from the USO Union, which has been a prominent actor in the oil industry in Barrancabermeja.

There was a great deal of discussion about how to move forward this unique, alliance of former adversaries, who are now all working for peace. The Castleberry Peace Institute will be an international supporter of these initiatives and I will be taking an active role in helping lead these discussions and providing support for peacebuilding and community building initiatives.
