Prof. Ishiyama's Research

My research related to human security has focused recently on the transformation of rebel groups into political parties. I am particularly interested in how rebel groups, organized to fight a war, transform into organizations that compete in elections A second research agenda is a focus on ethnic politics and ethnic conflict, particularly the role of institutions (such as federalism, electoral rules, and parties) affect both the promotion of conflict and peace. Third, I have had a longstanding interest the politics of authoritarianism, particularly in Russia and Eurasia, Ethiopia, and North Korea.
